Perimenopause
The perimenopause is a natural stage in your life and one that can be healthy and happy. It is possible to effectively manage your symptoms and enjoy a good quality of life, full of energy and with a spring in your step.
Think of it as the start of a natural change, not a decline. Understanding what is happening to your body right now is an important step to help you choose the right path – one that will nourish and support you through this time of change.
What is happening in your 40s?
When you hit your 40s you may feel that you no longer recognise or even like the person you are turning into. For some, it’s like you’re reliving the rage and anger of your teenage years. But this time around you may have the added responsibility of being the cornerstone of the family and often with the added pressure of a busy job too.
Sex hormones start to fluctuate
During the years leading to your menopause, your eggs start to reduce and your oestrogen and progesterone levels start to fluctuate and decline.
And it is these fluctuating sex hormones that can contribute to some of the most common symptoms such as:
Symptoms
- PMS and irregular periods
- Hot flushes and night sweats
- Brain fog
- Anxiety
- Low libido
- Joint pain
- Insomnia
- Mood swings
- Low energy
- Weight gain
But it’s not just declining oestrogen and progesterone that are responsible for the difficulties you are experiencing.
What? Are more hormones getting in on the act?
Yes! Your stress hormone cortisol, your fat storage hormone insulin and your thyroid which controls your metabolism may also be involved and making their mark by wreaking havoc on how your body behaves.
Is it a gradual thing?
For many people, the full throttle of the perimenopause hits you full on as you leave behind your carefree days of your 30s and move into a new decade.
For others, the symptoms creep up gradually and may even go unnoticed for a number of years.
But whether your perimenopause is a slow burner or full-on onslaught, this is the time to take action.
Your hormones are incredibly sensitive and if any of them are out of balance, then everything else will be impacted.
Out of balance hormones DO matter!

I started working with Nikki when I was experiencing all the typical perimenopausal symptoms. I felt fat, cranky, angry and desperate. Nikki did some tests so that she could pinpoint what was really going on in my body. I am so pleased that she did as I now feel AMAZING.
I genuinely believe that getting myself sorted was the best decision I have made in a while. I just wished I had done it earlier!
Nikki is very approachable and made me feel very at ease and supported throughout my programme.
